Bitcoin plunges as much as 20 percent as Chinese yuan soars

January 06, 2017

A dramatic rally in digital currency bitcoin came to a spectacular end on Thursday with a plunge of up to 20 percent as China's yuan rose sharply - further evidence of an intriguing inverse relationship between the pair.
Bitcoin had gained more than 40 percent in two weeks to hit a three-year high of $1,139.89 on Wednesday, just shy of its all-time record of $1,163 on the Europe-based Bitstamp exchange BTC=BTSP. But it dived as low as $885.41 on Thursday as the yuan jumped by over 1 percent in offshore trading and headed for its strongest two-day performance on record. CNH=D3 [CNY/]
Chinese exchanges have reported high volumes of trading of the web-based "cryptocurrency" over the past year, during which time the yuan has shed almost 7 percent, its worst annual performance since 1994, while bitcoin has surged 125 percent, outperforming all other currencies for a second year in a row.
Bitcoin can used for moving money across the globe quickly and anonymously, and operates outside the control of any central authority. That makes it attractive to those wanting to get around capital controls, such as in China, and also to investors who are worried about a devaluation in their currency.
"Given that the yuan's weakness over recent months seemed to correlate with bitcoin's strength more than any other currency, it's no surprise that bitcoin traders have reacted the way they have to the yuan's sudden strength today," said Paul Gordon, co-founder of London-based Quantave, a firm seeking to make it easier for investors to access digital currency exchanges.
Exchanges in China say they account for more than 90 percent of global bitcoin trading, which would help explain why a shift in Chinese demand would sharply affect the price.
But many bitcoin experts say Chinese exchanges overstate their volumes in the digital currency, and attribute sharp moves to speculation by, for example, U.S.-based hedge funds.
Some said bitcoin's fall was a natural reaction to the speed of its previous rise. It is still up more than 50 percent on three months ago, when it was trading at around $600,
"If something goes up very rapidly...people make a lot of money, and at some point they’re going to want to sell, in order to realize their gains," said Marco Streng, CEO of bitcoin mining and trading firm Genesis Mining.
By 1645 GMT (11:45 a.m. ET), bitcoin had recovered some of its earlier losses to trade down almost 15 percent on the day at around $950, still leaving it on course for its worst performance in a year.
On some digital currency exchanges - of which there are dozens - bitcoin did reach record highs late on Wednesday.
"Once we broke through the nominal all-time high, liquidity dried up - no shorts, no sellers, which means a volatile little bubble formed quickly," said Peter Smith, CEO of London-based Blockchain, the biggest bitcoin wallet-provider globally.

"We are seeing the effects of that now as it breaks. It's still fairly thin trading volume though, so who really knows where it goes next."

Naira crashes against dollar for the first time in 2017

January 06, 2017

The Nigerian Naira on Thursday, January 5, weakened against the American Dollar at the parallel market for the first time in 2017.
According to reports, the Naira lost three points to the dollar as it closed at N493 to a dollar, against N490 it traded on Wednesday, January 4.
Also, the Pound Sterling and the Euro exchanged for N595 and N506, respectively.
At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the Naira traded at N399 to a dollar, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) controlled rate, while Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N598 and N510 respectively.
The Naira, however, remained stable at the interbank window as it exchanged for N305.00 to a dollar.
However, traders at the market said that liquidity challenge was far from being resolved, NAN reports.
On his part, Aminu Gwadabe, the president, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), while decrying the spike in the exchange rate, commended the CBN for keeping it below N500 to a dollar.
Gwadabe said the task of keeping the dollar below N500 and controlling the inflation rate was enormous.
He added that the apex bank was doing its best
But according to currency traders, the Naira is set to witness another round of decline against the dollar in the coming days ahead.
This is because the expected increase in dollar flows from Nigerians living abroad coming home for holidays fell short of expectations.
“We see the naira depreciating against the dollar by the time more businesses resume operations next week after the festive season as dollar liquidity remains thin in the market,” one currency dealer said.

MMM: Why we set up meeting with FG

January 06, 2017

After the House of representatives passed a resolution seeking the abolition of Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, otherwise known as MMM and probe of its promoters in the country, the MMM community in Abuja, has disclosed plans to set up a meeting with the government.
Recall that in November last year, the House of Representatives condemned the Scheme and also promised to investigate the scheme.
It had directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to immediately go after the promoters of MMM in Nigeria.
But the MMM community in Abuja said it was coordinating the planned meeting, noting that it hopes to submit a proposal for the amendment of the Banking and Other Financial Institutions Acts, BOFIA to legalize the operations of the scheme and similar money initiatives in the country.
Speaking on the development, a member of the steering committee of the MMM community, Chief Mike Chukwuma, told New Telegraph, “MMM has helped immensely in easing the pains of recession.
“Instead of discouraging Nigerians from participating in the financial self-help scheme, the government should rather legalize its activities so that it could be monitored and regulated.”

Queen Elizabeth nearly shot by her guardsman as she strolled the palace grounds at 3a.m

January 05, 2017

Queen Elizabeth narrowly escaped being shot by one of her guardsmen after she was seen wandering the garden of what is believed to be Buckingham Palace at 3 a.m.

The queen who is known to walk around the palace whenever she can't sleep was taking one of such walks, dressed in a winter coat, when the guard came across the Queen and taking precaution, asked, “Who’s that?” It was only then that he realised it was the monarch.

He was reported to have exclaimed “Bloody hell, Your Majesty. I nearly shot you” to which the Queen replied, “That’s quite all right. Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.”

In 2013, Prince Andrew had the same encounter in the same garden when he was confronted by a policeman who mistook him for an intruder in broad daylight.

The vigilance of the security guards is quite understandable considering how often intruders have scaled the fence and gotten into the palace in the past.

In August 2016, a 22-year-old man was arrested after he climbed over a security fence just after 4 a.m. and was spotted by officers monitoring the CCTV. In May 2016 Denis Hennessy, 41, climbed over the fence and roamed freely in the palace grounds.

When he was found by officers he repeatedly asked them “Is Ma’am in?”

In 2013 a man was found after 10 p.m. in one of the State Rooms after he scaled the fence.

Presidency Replies Fayose Over N5,000 Stipend To Poor Nigerians (Read)

January 05, 2017

The Presidency on Wednesday disagreed with the claim of Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on the disbursement of N5, 000 to poor Nigerians.
Fayose, whose state was listed as part of the nine states where the payments had commenced, denied the take-off of the scheme in his state.
The governor said the report was untrue and mere propaganda.
However, in a chat with State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, said the administration was built on integrity and accountability and will not claim to do what it was not doing.
He said: "It was announced specifically from the office of the Vice President that the scheme has started in nine states. And then a certain governor came out to say it is not true.
"It is just a matter of who do you believe. This is a government that is built on integrity and accountability.
"This government will not lie to Nigerians, does not lie to Nigerians, in fact anything you hear from this government you can take it to the bank, believe it.
"So if anybody comes and say it is politics, it is not true. Choose who to believe I can tell you that you should believe this government because this government will not lie to you."

NDLEA Arrests 269 Drug Traffickers, Convicts 53 (See Details)

January 05, 2017

The Kaduna State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said on Thursday it arrested 269 suspected drug traffickers and convicted 53 in the state from January to December last year.
The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr. Samuel Azige, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.
Azige noted that the number of those arrested was higher in 2016 compared with the 232 arrested in 2015.
He also said 18,298.375 kilograms of illicit drugs were seized from the suspects during the period under review, indicating a decrease from the 23,169.596 kilograms seized in 2015.
Azige attributed the reduction to the massive public enlightenment carried out within the year to educate the public against drug abuse.
"Out of the figure, psychotropic substance constituted the highest with 16,550. 239 kilograms, an increase from 14, 129 kilograms seized in 2015, while Indian hemp decreased from 23, 285 kilograms in 2015 to 1,748.032 kilograms in 2016.
"The quantity of cocaine seized was 0.031 kilograms and heroine 0.019 kilograms.
"As you can see, psychotropic substance seized was higher than Indian hemp that used to be the highest.
"This showed that more people are taking these dangerous substances which increased its demand and supply," Azige said.

Is masturbation or using sex toys a sin? Fan asks OAP Freeze

January 05, 2017

A fan asked OAP Freeze if the use of sex toys or masturbation is a sin. Freeze gives a very comprehensive response. Read his response after the cut...

This is one of the most difficult questions anyone has ever asked me. From the way the letter is constructed, you can tell that the young man is not only intelligent and well educated, but he is also polite, which indicates that his parents brought him up well. From his tone, I can see this is a genuine question that is bothering not only him, but a multitude of other people, young and old, irrespective of their religious inclination.
The religious righteousness in me wanted to tell him that masturbation is a sin and must never be engaged in, but where does that leave the 46 year old widow, who confided in me last year, that she had to buy a sex toy because her husband died, leaving her with 6 children and no man wanted to marry her, so instead of jumping from one man to the other, she decided to please herself?
Or an unmarried man at 35, when I know it's unhealthy, according to empirical research, not to empty your prostate regularly, as it predisposes men to prostate cancer later in life?
---
Marc Garnick, M.D., Editor in Chief of Harvard Medical School’s Annual Report on Prostate Diseases, says:
"Two relatively large studies of this question, reported in 2003 and 2004, yielded good news for sexually active men: high ejaculation frequency seemed to protect against prostate cancer." Ejaculations included sexual intercourse, nocturnal emissions/masturbation. According to the study available at www.harvardprostateknowledge.org The scientists found that men who ejaculated 21 or more times a month enjoyed a 33% lower risk of prostate cancer compared with men who reported four to seven ejaculations a month."
---
Now, before that righteous Yahoo Boy, who you intend to give your January salary to, jumps up and starts calling masturbation a sin, let's remember that Isaac married Rebecca when she was only 3 years old, according to research done by some scholars and the average marriage age for boys in biblical times was around 13. Furthermore, David had several wives and concubines, Solomon had 1000, Abraham 2 wives several concubines, Jacob 2 wives and their housegirls, so emptying the prostate wasn't such a problem.

N5000 stipend: Femi Adesina replies Fayose, says "Anything you hear from this government you can take it to the bank"

January 05, 2017

Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has reacted to speculations that the recently announced payment of N5000 to vulnerable Nigerians by the Federal government is a fuss and not true.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had on Monday released a statement announcing that the Federal government has fulfilled one of its electoral promise to pay N5000 to vulnerable and indigent Nigerians. Osinbajo in the statement said that 4 out of the 9 pilot states, have kicked started the payment while the remaining states are to follow after they must have collated a comprehensive list of the vulnerable Nigerians residing there.

Hours after the announcement, Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, released a statement describing the announcement as mere propaganda. He said no one in his state has received the said N5000. “A blind man will say it is when it gets into my mouth that I will say you are feeding me, not promises. Apparently the states they claimed have started receiving payments are APC-controlled states knowing fully that the governors cannot come out to disprove the payments,” Fayose said in a statement released by his media aide, Idowu Adelusi .

However reacting to Fayose’s comment, Adesina in an interview, yesterday said the Federal government cannot rescind in its promise and that the announcement that some states have started receiving the stipend is fact.

“On N5,000 stipend, it was announced specifically from the office of the vice president that the scheme has started in nine states. Then a certain governor came and said it is not true. It is just a matter of who do you believe? This is a government that is built on integrity and accountability. This government will not lie to Nigerians, does not lie to Nigerians. In fact, anything you hear from this government you can take it to the bank, believe it. So, if anybody comes and say it is politics and that it is not true, choose who to believe. Speaking with PT, the Reggae Blues singer reacted to reports making the rounds that he secretly wedded the 2015 Most Beautiful Girl in Niger Delta, Harriet Edide, last year.

But Harrysong has dismissed the report. He said:
"I never (been) married to the girl in question and I have never been married. It is not something that should be kept secret if I was indeed married. Yes, Harriet and I dated in the past so she is just my ex-girlfriend."

NDLEA Finds £3.8M Cocaine Inside Shoes At Abuja Airport

January 03, 2017

Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja have discovered parcels of whitish substance that tested positive for cocaine inside soles of shoes.
The suspected cocaine, according to a statement released on Monday in Lagos by the agency's spokesperson, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, weighed 9.150kgs.
"The discovery was made in a shipment of shoes during inward screening of passengers on a Turkish airline flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The cocaine was industrially concealed in the soles of new foot wears.

"It was the last arrest of 2016 at the Abuja airport with an estimated value of 3.8 million pounds.

There was an arrest at the weekend of a 34- year old suspect, Kingsley Okolo. The suspect who is a motorcycle parts dealer said that he was offered the N1 million to smuggle the drugs to Nigeria.

Investigation is on going and the suspect is cooperating with our team of undercover officers," Ofoyeju said.
He also quoted the chairman of the NDLEA, Mr Muhammad Abdallah, as saying that the huge profit derived from drug trafficking has made it a top priority for drug cartels to be financially incapacitated.
"We must continue to take deliberate steps to intercept drugs and ultimately prevent the criminal enrichment of drug cartels.

"Illicit drug proceeds negatively affect economic development and could be used to corrupt government officials and fund terrorism thereby subjecting mankind to widespread destruction," Abdallah stated.
Abdallah also commended the arresting officers describing the seizure as one of the benefits of training.
The NDLEA boss said the suspect will soon be charged to court.

Two Found Dead At Meek Mill's Concert In Connecticut, USA

January 03, 2017

Gunshots at a Meek Mill concert in Wallingford, Conn. late Friday night have left two people dead and two people with non-life-threatening injuries.
Meek Mill had been performing at the Oakdale Theatre, where doors opened at 8 p.m. The Philly rapper was caught on camera leaving the venue at around 11 p.m. as the first shot rang out.
In a video obtained by The Shade Room, several figures are seen leaving the venue quite casually and heading for a car before one gunshot is heard, leading to utter pandemonium. Police arrived to find four victims on the scene, two fatally wounded.
The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made. Wallingford Police Lt. Cheryl Bradley said the shooting isn't related to Meek Mill. FG starts payment of N5000 stipend to destitute Nigerians

January 03, 2017

The Federal government has begun payment of N5000 to poor Nigerians. A statement released by the Special Assistant to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande today, says out of the Nine states earmarked for the kickoff of the scheme, four of the states have already been funded and their participants have started receiving bank alerts.

The statement says the nine pilot states were chosen because they have an existing Social Register that successfully identified the most vulnerable and poorest Nigerians through a tried and tested community based targeting (CBT) method working with the World Bank.Laolu in the statement also disclosed that 50% of graduates enrolled in the Federal Government N-Power programme have started receiving their N30,000 salaries.

The statement also disclosed that the Federal Government has also started the implementation of the National Home-grown School Feeding programme which is designed to feed 5.5 million school children for 200 school days in the first phase of the programme.

Although the initial design was to feed pupils in 18 States, funding challenges had affected an earlier take-off. However the programme has commenced in Osun, Kaduna and Anambra States.

Funds for the commencement of the conditional cash transfer payments in four states were released last week to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) – the platform that hosts and validates payments for all government’s social intervention programmes. Funds for another set of five states to complete the first batch of nine states would follow soon. Though the sequence for the payment of the money would be operationally managed by NIBSS, beneficiaries in Borno, Kwara and Bauchi States have started receiving the money. The other states in the first batch to commence the CCT payments are Cross Rivers, Niger, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun & Ekiti States.
The nine pilot states were chosen because they have an existing Social Register that successfully identified the most vulnerable and poorest Nigerians through a tried and tested community based targeting (CBT) method working with the World Bank. However other states have already begun developing their Social Registers and would be included in subsequent phases of the CCT implementation. Beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer of the Federal Government would be mined from the Social Register, initially developed by 8 States through a direct engagement with the World Bank.
Those states are featured in the first batch, with the added inclusion of Borno States where a validated list of IDPS were compiled in addition to the Social Register which is expected to go round the country. Working with the World Bank, the CBT process has now been adopted for developing the Social Register in the other States around the country, for transparency, objectivity and credibility in the selection of the poorest and most vulnerable beneficiaries for the programme.
The Federal Government will actually commence community mobilization for the creation of the Register in more States soon, to expand the scope and reach of the CCT across the country. Meanwhile, Plateau, Jigawa, Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Enugu, Katsina & Taraba States have so far complied with the stipulated framework provided, and are set for the community based targeting method for the development of their Social Register within their jurisdictions.
These States are to be followed by Delta, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Imo and Ogun States. Once the community mobilization, identification and selection processes are completed, the information garnered from the poorest households would be entered onto the Social Register in the states and the National Register at NIBSS, after which the cash transfers would be disbursed to the beneficiaries. All the funds approved for the Federal Government’s Social Investment Programmes, SIP, are domiciled with the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. In addition, the payment information and processes for all beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s SIP are hosted at NIBSS, as the Consolidated Beneficiary Register, to ensure and fortify efforts at authentication and verification, as well as for effective and efficient programme management.
With the commencement of the CCT, the Buhari administration is now implementing four of the Federal Government's SIP.
Besides the CCT, the N-Power Volunteer Corps designed to hire half a million unemployed graduates which has now engaged 200,000, and the National Homegrown School Feeding Programme now running in three states, the Buhari administration has also kicked-off the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, (GEEP).
Under GEEP, soft loans ranging from N10,000 to 100,000 have been designed for artisans, traders, market women among others. Already, thousands of cooperatives, market women associations, farmers and enterprising youths, have been identified and registered for the purpose, on an ongoing basis, and the disbursement of the soft loans through the Bank of Industry have started since Nov 25, 2016.
At the last count, for the first phase, beneficiaries have been drawn from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Delta, Imo, Kwara, Kano, Katsina, Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Kogi States.
However, disbursements were halted and deferred until after the festive season. Vetting and approval of beneficiaries are now being continued through the month, with the expectation and plan that by month-end disbursements would have been made to 33,000 beneficiaries.
Regarding the 200,000 beneficiaries of the N-Power programme, close to 50% of the graduates, have now been physically verified, and started receiving their monthly stipends of N30,000 last week. A second batch of 300,000 unemployed graduates are expected to be selected early this year to make up the half a million target set by the Buhari administration.
The verified graduates are now being deployed to work as assistant teachers in schools, as community health aides and as agricultural extension workers, in more than 20 States of the Federation. These States include; Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Anambra, Benue, Cross Rivers, Borno, Gombe, Edo, Jigawa, Katsina, Plateau, Kogi, Osun, Rivers, Zamfara, Niger, Sokoto, Ogun and Taraba.
Government has also started the implementation of the National Home-grown School Feeding programme designed to feed 5.5 million school children for 200 school days in the first phase of the programme. Although the initial design was to feed pupils in 18 States, funding challenges had affected an earlier take-off. But the programme has now commenced in Osun, Kaduna and Anambra States. More states are expected to join this new year.
In the new year, it is the plan of the Federal Government to scale up the implementation of the SIP to touch the lives of millions of Nigerians in fulfillment of it’s promises and in furtherance of its Change agenda.
